When a young watch designer joins an established luxury watch brand and his first major brief is to develop a radical new expression of the brand’s most iconic model, he needs to have some great ideas ready...

Young Swiss designer Adrian Buchmann (28) rose to that challenge, taking Christopher Ward’s Trident collection to a new level with a stunning new interpretation of the mighty Trident – the C60 Trident Chronograph Pro 600. The design clearly shares the instantly recognisable Trident DNA, but Adrian’s creative new influence is immediately apparent right from first sight of the dial – this is a living, breathing Trident!

The eye is particularly drawn by two highly engaging design elements. For some, the most prominent feature will be the boldness of the deep navy and metallic yellow dial that invites closer inspection of what is probably Christopher Ward’s most detailed dial to date. For others it will be the intriguing and mesmerising 60 seconds sub-dial at the 9-o’clock position – a design inspired by a diver’s breathing regulator - which 'breathes' via a rotating disc behind a cut-out display, injecting life into this deep-sea machine.

This dynamic feature blends design with inherent practicality, offering ease of reading for the diver and instant reassurance at depth; while the more casual, land-based user will simply delight in the vivacity of the display. Finally, the deep (sea) blue colour of the dial adds an atmospheric backdrop to the drama of the vivid yellow sub-dials.

Beyond aesthetics, the C60 Trident Chronograph Pro 600 also provides technical advances too. With the needs of the professional diver in mind, the uni-directional ceramic bezel has been enhanced by the addition of a full minute-track and a more robustly defined font for the numerals, which are filled with high-grade SuperLuminovaTM for outstanding luminosity.

Engineered to resist water at up to depths of 600 metres (2000 feet) the fluid contours of the Trident’s 43mm case, which also incorporates an automatic helium release valve, surround one of the most reliable and robust of chronograph movements, the self-winding ETA Valjoux 7750.

Further incremental enhancements include the ergonomically elegant case-back, with the edges of its fluid contours now chamfered and softened, blending elegantly with the re- designed rotating ceramic bezel.

Alongside the launch of the C60 Trident Chronograph Pro 600 the Trident Collection is further enhanced by the launch of two new models in titanium, the first use of this extraordinary metal in the Trident range. Combining the lightness and strength of titanium with the precision engineering of the C60 Trident Pro 600 (43mm) has resulted in two new dive options offered in two arresting colour options, injecting a darker edge into the Trident Collection.

C60 Trident Titanium Pro 600 Variation #1 - The darker hue on the two-tone brushed grey titanium case results from a diamond-like-carbon (DLC) finish and is complemented by the matt ceramic insert of the bezel, matt grey titanium indexes and hands - which are filled with blue emission SuperLuminovaTM - and the warm grey printing of the minute track and brand logo. The new C60 Trident Titanium Pro 600 Variation #1 is offered with options of a titanium bracelet (£995), a rubber touch leather strap with titanium buckle (£750), and a high-density rubber strap with titanium buckle (£750).

C60 Trident Titanium Pro 600 Variation #2 - The brooding black 43mm case of Trident Titanium #2 is relieved by the sharp white lume of the indexes, hands and numerals of the matt black ceramic bezel. The option of the PVD black titanium bracelet offers the most full-on expression of the model’s tongue-in-cheek ‘Black ops’ appeal, but this bold new arrival is a deep diving thoroughbred. Variation #2 enjoys a precision-engineered fluidity of line that would benefit any water bound covert operation. The new C60 Trident Titanium Pro 600 Variation #2 is offered with options of a PVD titanium bracelet (£1,025), a high density rubber strap with titanium buckle (£775), and a rubber touch leather strap with black titanium buckle (£775).

In the words of the classic Huey Lewis song - Christopher Ward’s latest launch shows that it’s ‘hip to be square’!

Three decades on from that song Christopher Ward’s first new launch of 2016 presents the company’s thinnest-ever mechanical model, the C5 Malvern Slimline Square - creating a stunning new streamlined style option to further expand the highly popular Malvern range.

At 37mm square, the C5 Malvern Slimline Square has been meticulously proportioned to sit perfectly on almost every size of wrist and, with a height of only 8.25mm, it will slide elegantly under the most sharply tailored shirt or blouse cuff. On the dial the refined diamond-polished nickel hands are dual faceted, blending sophisticated style with ease of reading. The Sellita 210-1 movement is housed in a newly re-engineered case and the Côtes de Genève finish on the bridge further enhances the pleasure of viewing the power unit through the transparent case-back. The two initial dial colour options offer a sunray effect one-piece dial in blue or a classic matt white, creating startlingly different expressions of the 'square style' of the C5 Malvern Slimline Square.

Designing the perfectly proportioned square watch had become something of an obsession for the design team at Christopher Ward, as Mike France, co-founder of the brand, explains: “The square format has long been a design classic that presents a particularly strong challenge to the watch designer to get it exactly right. With the right proportions it is a shape that can be used to blend retro elements with a contemporary tone to create a truly standout design. However, that unique balance between classic and contemporary, modern yet retro, the proportions have to be absolutely spot on - and I think we really hit that mark with this design. The square shape is sometimes overlooked by watch aficionados but I hope that our C5 Malvern Slimline Square shows that the shape is not only eminently practical but that this design also projects a blend of discreet old-school style with a dynamic modern edge. The leather strap option helps to dial-up the classical character while the fine-knit Milanese bracelet delivers a stunning modern expression to our Malvern collection.”

Christopher Ward launch the C9 Jumping Hour Mark III – the third expression of Johannes Jahnke’s outstanding calibre JJ01 modified movement – presented in a stylish new design.

With the growing demand for smaller diameter dress watches, Christopher Ward present a Mark III version of their ground-breaking C9 Jumping Hour – a new 40mm model offering a stunningly elegant evolution of the C9 aesthetic that has become the signature look of the brand’s premium watch collection.

Hand-assembled at the company’s atelier in Biel, Switzerland, by Christopher Ward watchmaker Johannes Jahnke and his team, the Mark III adopts Arabic numerals in the mesmerising hour change aperture at the ‘12’ position on the optic white dial. The new features combine perfectly with the elegantly understated design of the dial, producing a watch of captivating beauty and clarity. Each watch is offered on a premium quality strap with a double folded Bader deployment.

Behind the design enhancements the Jumping Hour Mk III retains, of course, the proven calibre JJ01 that beats beneath the dial and is visible through the screw-down exhibition case-back.

Further refined since Jahnke’s original development in the 43mm Mark I & Mark II, his ETA 2824-2 with modified jumping hour complication is among the most precise jumping hour mechanism ever seen. The energy for the ‘jump’ is generated over the course of an hour, ensuring that the power usage for the watch remains consistent throughout and also makes for a more robust movement. The model incorporates a 38-hour power reserve.

The C60 Trident Pro and C60 Trident GMT remain at the heart of the Trident collection, powered by the same proven movements, which is enhanced by a swathe of innovations across the range. The new arrivals are led by the flagship C60 Trident COSC, featuring Christopher Ward’s in-house movement, Calibre SH21, at the heart of this chronometer version – only the second model to carry the pioneering innovation.

Equally audacious and innovative, however, is the arrival of an entry-level quartz model, C60 Trident 300, using the Ronda 515 calibre.

Trident – re-engineered…Extensive re-engineering utilises upgraded materials, combined with design enhancements that unmistakably express the Trident family DNA, complemented by the retention of iconic features such as the hands, Trident counter- balance and wave pattern guilloche dial of the original. The new baton-style indexes of the mechanical versions are deep-filled with the new SuperLuminovaTM SLN T C1 lume paint to provide brighter and extended luminosity above that of the Mark 1 model.

The new Trident case, in marine-grade 316L steel, clearly echoes the design of the original but has been comprehensively re-engineered, including sharper and improved architecture and finishing. The three mechanical versions are capable of withstanding water pressure at up to 600m (2000ft) and have been upgraded to include zirconia ceramic (Zr02) bezels while the quartz version has retained the aluminium bezel of the original and, as denoted by the name, is capable of depths to 300m (1000ft).

This detailed re-definition of Trident extends to the case-back, with the Trident logo deep- stamped into the stainless steel plate, producing a 3D appearance that was first seen in the C65 Trident Classic.

Choice – re-defined… Complementing the expanded range of model, case size, movement and bezel combinations are re-designed natural rubber dive straps, Italian leather straps, a leather NATO strap and a marine-grade stainless steel bracelet, creating a stunning choice menu of 133 versions of Trident to suit anyone, anywhere, any time.

Christopher Ward C70-3527GT Chronograph

In partnership with TMB Artmetal we are proud to offer you the chance of owning a small piece of one of the world's most iconic, and not to say valuable, cars - the Ferrari 250 GTO.

Embedded behind museum-grade sapphire crystal in the back-plate of this stunning chronometer is an original piece of exterior panelling from the seventh GTO (only 39 were ever built), which left the Ferrari factory on 22nd May, 1962. The date is actually featured in the watch's tachymeter.

To understand the GTO's importance in the annals of automotive history, one needs only to recall the world record $52 million spent by an unnamed buyer in October 2013 to secure chassis number 5111 GT from Connecticut-based collector Paul Pappalardo.

The chassis number of the C70's car, 3527 GT, gives this strictly limited watch its nomenclature, and this is indicated on the side of the case.

The traditional Ferrari colouring of the beautifully executed dial serves as an impressive overture for the back-plate of the watch. The piece of original metal has been skillfully cut by experts in Switzerland to allow the number 6 from the car's number-plate to be shown in glorious Rosso Corsa livery.

To own a Ferrari 250 GTO is an impossible dream for all but a handful of billionaire collectors and ageing rock stars (Nick Mason of Pink Floyd owns one); but for a fortunate few, the dream can be at least partially realised by owning the C70 3527 GT.
