Rolex spotted...

I have always liked the 3 guys from Top Gear (ex), currently The Grand Tour and I do like other shows and documentaries with them as the host. Recently I was watching Richard Hammond's Big. It is his new documentary on Discovery. It is a pretty cool documentary.

Anyway...spotted this on the episode on US Air Force Super Plane (Episode 2 if I am not mistaken). I don't think I have seen Hamster wearing this before, so it must be new.

It is the Rolex GMT-Master II reference 116710LN. Looks like the Hamster is adding to his collection of Rolex watches. Cool....

When brothers meet...

I went to my favorite strap maker to pick up a new strap for my Tudor 7016 when it met its elder brother.... The Rolex 5512.

This post is picture heavy and apologies for the poor quality of some of the photographs.

Harsh lighting... a bit of washout. Can't really see the patina.

After making some slight adjustment.

Swiss only dial on the Tudor 7016. :)

Beautiful patina on the Rolex 5512.

Just awesome...

The Tudor fitted with a new strap.

Space

Recently I was very fortunate to be able to cross out an item from my to-do list (of many many things). What was the item? Well, I was very fortunate to be able to attend, listen and talk to an astronaut.

The astronaut I met was Dr. Leroy Chiao. You can read about him here:

and here:

After his presentation, I managed to have short talk with him about watches in space. He actually has a blog entry on his blog on watches.

Interesting to see what watch he had on his wrist.

From his blog entry and pictures of him from the NASA and the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center archives, you can see that his favorite watch (and some say his trademark watch) is a Rolex GMT-Master on a Jubilee bracelet.

Dr. Leroy on his way for the launch into space. You can clearly see his Rolex.

Not sure where he is in this photograph.

Dr. Leroy in the space shuttle Columbia.

Dr. Leroy wore his Rolex on 4 missions:

Columbia (July 1994)
Endeavour (January 1996)
Discovery (October 2000)
Soyuz Expedition X leader on the ISS (192 days)

He was in space for a total of 229 Days and 8 hours. I believe that is the longest a Rolex have been in space.

Dr. Leroy also did 6 EVA (Extra-Vehicular Activity) and you can see the photographs of him doing the EVA.

It was interesting to see that he was not wearing any watch during the EVA. I asked him about it and he said he did not wear any watch while doing EVA and a number of astronauts he knew also did not wear any watches while doing the EVA as they were in constant contact with someone and if they need to know the time, just ask.

A closer look at Dr. Leroy Rolex GMT-Master.

Sadly I don't know if the watch is reference 16750 or 16700.

Anyway, it was just awesome to be able to meet him.

Watch spotting...

I was watching this on youtube and it was interesting to see what Nico Rosberg (former F1 Champion) was wearing. I do know he is a Rolex ambassador but I think the watch he was wearing is his personal one.

Stills taken from the show...

You can see he is wearing the white dial Rolex Daytona.

Perhaps he was influenced by this man. :)

Or it could be due to Rolex and the Daytona  long history with motor racing.

More pictures of Nico with his Rolex watches.

Looks like he has the Hulk as well.

And of course he has this watch...

Collaborations...

I find collaborations such an interesting topic, more so in the watch world. Take for example the Tudor and Breitling collaboration. Never expected that.

The Tudor Breitling collaboration allows Tudor to use the Breitling B01 as the base movement for its caliber MT5813. Breitling will build the movement for Tudor but using parts from Tudor like the oscillating weight, silicon balance spring and even finish the movement to Tudor specifications. The movement will be used in the Tudor Black Bay Chrono.

In return, Breitling gets Tudor to build its caliber B20, which is based on the Tudor MT5613. As with the case above, Tudor will build the movement for Breitling using parts from Breitling like the oscillating weight, regulating system, balance spring and finish the movement to Breitling specifications. This movement will be used in the Breitling Superocean Heritage II.

On the other hand we have this interesting collaboration between Rolex, Swatch Group and Patek Philippe. They back the Swiss Micro-engineering Institute CSEM which holds the intellectual property on the development of silicon hairsprings. And because they own the intellectual property, Baume&Mercier, and by extension its parent company Richemont have been asked to stop using the silicon hairsprings. This was used in Baume&Mercier Baumatic watch which was launched in 2018. I believe the case is in the courts.

This is the most interesting collaboration so far this year, maybe last year. It involves the company known as Kenissi Holding SA. Not much is known about the company except it is the industrial arm of Tudor and it will make automatic movement for watches. It is also reported that the owner is a Swiss industrialist whose main line of business is making sapphire crystals for some of the biggest watch groups.

It is currently based in Geneva but will move to a new facility in Le-Locle in 2021. It is reported that the facility will be divided into two parts, one for Tudor and the other half for Kenissi. It is believed that the facility is being built by Rolex on land owned by Rolex.

This is where it gets interesting. Chanel announced that it has acquired a 20% stake in Kenissi at almost the same time it acquired a minority shareholding in F.P. Journe (believed to be about 20%). Chanel has also indicated that its first watch to be powered by the movement made by Kenissi will be shown in Basel 2019. Will this new movement appear in Bell&Ross watches, which Chanel has a majority shareholding?

It is also reported that Kenissi will be headed by Mr. Jean-Paul Girardin. He used to be the CEO of Breiling. Interesting no?

Other members of the board (also very interesting):

Mr. Eric Yvon Pirson. He is the Chief of Tudor, which should not come as a surprise.

Mr. Pascal Bratschi. He is a Director in Rolex.

Mr. Philippe Jacques Dalloz. He is a Director in a number of companies dealing with watch components. Could he be the hand behind Kenissi?

Mr. Frederic Jean-Paul Daniel Grangie. He is a Director in F.P. Journe.

Anyway, Basel 2019 is just around the corner and I am sure we will learn more then .

Lume shot

A long time ago I posted this lume shot of the Rolex Explorer II polar...

However, if you exposed the watch to sunlight, I have to say that the watch has one of the brightest lume I have seen...

Now I know why Rolex created the Explorer II for spelunkers.
