Animal Straps

I almost forgot about this strap until a friend asked me about straps for the Omega Speedmaster Moon watch. He was inquiring about the Velcro strap for the watch. I don't have the moon watch, but I have the X-33 and that did come with a Velcro strap that is locally made in Taiwan. While looking for it, I came across this strap.

This strap is the Animal strap made by Animal, a strap maker based in the UK. They started out in 1987 by two surfers who were really fed up of losing their watches in the water due to the straps breaking under extreme conditions. So they came up with a solution that uses Velcro and the rest, they say is history.

I got this strap either in the late 80s or early 90s. That makes this strap about 20 years old, if not more. I got it for my Casio MD-703 diver watch. And that is long time ago.

The strap.

The brand, Animal. How the leather have aged.

The strap is basically comes in two parts, the male and female sides of the Velcro. They actually form the strap. The strap is well made (it lasted 20 years) and can be washed. It is very comfortable on the wrist.

The strap. It is 36 cm long.

The two 'halves'. The female side. It is 19 cm long and 25 mm wide. It is wider compared to the male side. This side 'becomes' the strap and sits on the wrist.

The male side. The male side has the nice 'Hawaiian' inspired decorations. It is 16.5 cm long and 20mm wide. This 'lock' the strap and watch in place.

So how do you use the strap? Well, it is the same as a NATO or Zulu strap. The victim...I mean the watch I will use to show  how to use the strap.

Just thread the male side of the strap into the watch.

Make sure the spring bar or fixed lugs sits against the edge of the male section.

From the top.

Thread it thru the other spring bar.

And there you have it. All done. Simple yes?

This how it looks from the side. The larger female side will sit under the watch.

The watch on my wrist. It is a very comfortable strap. I like.

I don't think this particular strap or design is available as it has been a long long time. :)
